I wish I didn’t know about my son’s heart condition. There’s nothing I can do to help him and he lives 2,000 miles away from me. His wife takes good care of him and he’s a doctor himself, but none of that helps me at night when I can’t fall asleep because I’m worrying about him. I don’t want to lose him. I don’t want him to be sick. I don’t want his children to grow up without him. If I didn’t know about his condition, I’d be a much happier person. In my parents’ day, the younger generation would protect the older generation from bad news. Not anymore. I protected my parents. I never told them when I was separated from my husband the first time. I never told them when my youngest flunked out of college. What was the point in upsetting them? The only good thing about me knowing about my son is that because we have no secrets, we feel close. When I kept things from my parents I had to keep my distance so that nothing would slip out. That’s probably why we never were as intimate as other families. I would envy the grandparents and grandchildren who did lots of things with each other. We had to have distance so the grandparents wouldn’t find out whatever it was we were keeping from them.
